Oh, the places we’ll go…

The Shri Ram School

The Shri Ram School is a school in the middle of Gurgon, India. Gurgon is a small town outside of New Deli, India’s capital. It is very nice and when you get inside the town is becomes very quiet. In the mornings it is misty and cool. There is always a sent of burning wood like you were sitting by a fireplace. For a few of the days in the middle of our stay my mom got the Deli belly. The Deli belly is a very bad stomach virus. The Deli belly keeps you connected to the bathroom! You become more than just friends you become one. After the stomach bug went away we went to visit the Shri Ram School. All the schools we have visited before Shri Ram only let us look around for one day or even one class! Shri Ram gave us a week visit to really feel the culture and the way the school works. On the first day there was only one person I knew, Riday. Riday is a very tall 14-year-old boy who is the son of an exchange student that went to school with my uncles in high school way back in 1982!! The first day we were supposed to go there Riday was supposed to show me around but my mom was sick so we had to hold off one day. When we finally got into the school I was confused because I had no clue where to go. That day there was an assembly and so everyone was rushing around the halls but not me, I stood completely still not knowing where to go at all! We found the principal of the school who handed me off the teacher of the class I was in who handed me off to a boy who brought me to the auditorium. After the performance of dancing and singing I followed my classmates for the week into the classroom. I had to wait for the teacher to come into the class so she could tell me where to sit. I was placed next to a girl about the same age. We had the regular schedule that day, Hindi, Science, Math, French and a few more including lunch. That day was great but the next after that were great, very eventful! I met a girl named Devki she was very nice and we became fast friends. All of the students welcomed me right in and when it was time for me to leave they made me a HUGE goodbye card and a necklace and earrings. Even though it hasn’t been that long I miss them already. Especially Devki, she was like my sister! Well another one J! It was hard to believe at the end of it all that I had been there for a week. It was also hard to believe that I walked into the Shri Ram School with one friend and came out with and handful or two but, I am glad I have them!

Think that the school was probably just as happy your came there as you were. thanks for sharing this. Isn’t it amazing that Tojo, a family friend from the past, is the conduit to your experience. Lots of love and many big hugs. Mimi

Thanks for your wonderful story telling, Bec. So proud of you…you and your captivating beauty inside and out! I’m thankful I haven’t had to deal with Deli belly like your mom, but your little April Fool’s email joke almost gave me a Beijing brain drain and my heart definitely skipped a beat :) …I should have known better! Can’t wait to see your bright, beautiful self in person soon. LOVE YOU!

Ooooh! So sorry Mom got sick. I know that was no fun. Catchy name for the ailment, though…:)

I’ve missed the blogs, but you really painted a vivid picture of your experience with this entry. I’m so thankful that everywhere you go, people welcome you and make you feel comfortable. But you, I’m sure, do the same for them. They will always remember their time with you. What an amazing collection of memories you will have when this is all over!

I love you very much ~ keep writing! :)

What a way to describe an almost-every-day-ailment – the stomach ache! I really chuckled my way through your narrative – knowing I, and all of us, had experienced similar travel related trips to the porcelain lounge chair!!

I wonder sometimes how you’re going to find time, when you get home, to keep up with all your new found friends all over the world. Emails sent out to a mail list of 100?, 200? or even 500? And needing to be translated into so many languages? Your going to need your own secretary when you get home!

    Keep smiling!
    Love,
    Uncle Chris
